A Night to Celebrate: Music, Craftsmanship, and Community Impact at the Fox Theate

On February 8, 2025, at the iconic Fox Theater in Oakland, the Grateful Guitars Foundation presented Dark Star Orchestra’s rhythm guitarist Rob Eaton with a custom, one-of-a-kind guitar made by GGF Luthier Rich Hoeg.  Rich’s instructions from Rob, “Make me whatever guitar you’ve never made but always wanted to and don’t tell me what it’s going to be until I see it.”

“You can’t write the history of Grateful Guitars without our friends, Rob Eaton and Rich Hoeg, two of the best artists in the Grateful Dead music scene,” shares GGF Founder Andy Logan. “Rich made the first Blackknife that we gave away for Rob and he’s rocked it for years, so we are so stoked to facilitate this incredible build that represents the culmination of decades of work playing this legendary music that has proven to be built to last.”

Hoeg continues, “When Rob and I were talking about details, he said, ‘Whatever you decide, I know I’ll love it and play the hell out of it!’

In conjunction with the gift at the February 8 show, GGF hosted five students and their music teacher from Castlemont High School on behalf of Elevate Oakland for a day shadowing the DSO cast and crew.  Elevate Oakland, a non-profit that works to bring culturally vibrant art and music programs to Oakland’s youth was then presented a $5000 donation on behalf of the gifted guitar.

Rich Hoeg: The Master Luthier Behind the Music

Rich Hoeg is a name that resonates in the world of fine instrument craftsmanship. Over his 30+ year career, Rich has built custom guitars for music legends such as Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, and Steve Miller, leaving an indelible mark on the music industry during his time at Modulus and beyond. His innovation and artistry shine through every instrument he creates, each one a unique testament to his dedication to sound and design.

For this event, Rich has created a guitar unlike anything he’s made before—a surprise gift for Rob Eaton, designed based on Rob’s request for something truly extraordinary. This moment will mark the intersection of tradition, creativity, and musical excellence.

Rob Eaton: A Lifetime of Music and Dedication

Rob Eaton’s journey began in Vermont, where he fell in love with the Grateful Dead after hearing their iconic Europe ‘72 album. From performing with local bands to becoming a pivotal member of Dark Star Orchestra, Rob has dedicated his life to keeping the Dead’s music alive.

In addition to his onstage work, Rob is deeply involved in preserving the Grateful Dead’s history. His work restoring the legendary “Betty Boards” sound recordings has been instrumental in ensuring future generations can enjoy these priceless musical artifacts.

Dark Star Orchestra: Carrying the Torch

Dark Star Orchestra has spent nearly 30 years recreating the Grateful Dead’s live concert experience. With more than 3,100 performances under their belt, DSO continues to deliver the energy, authenticity, and improvisational magic that defined the Grateful Dead.

Elevate Oakland: Supporting Music Education

As part of our mission to support the next generation of musicians, the Grateful Guitars Foundation was honored to partner with Elevate Oakland, a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing arts and music education to public schools in Oakland, and present them with a $5000 donation in support of their mission. By integrating creative programs into schools, Elevate Oakland inspires students, fosters self-expression, and builds a sense of community, and GGF was honored to host five students from Mr. Z’s music class at Castlemont High School for the day showcasing the DSO production.
